Inter's Defense in Crisis? Bastoni's Potential Exit Could Force a Major Overhaul
Alessandro Bastoni has been a significant topic of discussion recently, not only for his performance with the national team against Northern Ireland but also regarding his club future. Beyond the possibility of remaining with the Nerazzurri, Barcelona has emerged as a primary suitor, reportedly identifying the Italian defender as the ideal profile for their defensive unit.
A Complete Defensive Overhaul?
Should Bastoni depart, Inter's defensive ranks would be alarmingly thin. Speculation has long surrounded the increasingly probable exits of Acerbi, De Vrij, and Darmian. In such a scenario, Bisseck would be the sole recognized central defender remaining. Carlos Augusto, while primarily a left wing-back, offers versatility as a wide center-back. Manuel Akanji, currently with Manchester City, is a name that has been linked, but even if a move for the Swiss defender materialized, Inter would still find themselves with only two central defenders.
The prospect of Inter signing four new defenders next season seems highly improbable, though in football, one can never say never. It's ironic, given this potential crisis, that Inter hasn't significantly invested in central defense for years, with targets like Bremer and Buongiorno ultimately joining Juventus and Napoli, respectively. Such a radical overhaul of the defensive line raises significant doubts, often leading to at least one transitional season. Recalling past examples of extensive, ill-fated acquisition campaigns, like those under Fassone and Mirabelli, highlights the risks involved when numerous new signings fail to integrate effectively.
